LCA AND EPDS FOR TWO MAIN PRODUCTS OF FRAUSCHER SENSOR TECHNOLOGY
Finishing off 2021, the ECODESIGN company assessed by means of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the environmental performance of a wheel detection system of the Austrian company Frauscher Sensortechnik GmbH. This wheel detection system consists of the Wheel Sensor RSR123, which is mounted at the railway tracks and provides relevant detection signals to the Frauscher Advanced Counter FAdC, which processes and then transmits the signals to control systems. This complete wheel detection system safely monitors track sections and enables the secure operations of railways worldwide.
For both, the Wheel Sensor and the FAdC, separate LCA were completed after a detailed modelling of an extensive bill materials for the parts and components was created in SimaPro. Matching datasets and appropriate calculation methods were selected for the more than 20 environmental aspects and impact indicators; according to the valid product category rules for Railways. The ECODESIGN company also prepared Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for both products, which are now verified and registered in the International EPD System, and can be downloaded here:
Through these LCAs, Frauscher actively strengthens its product development and sustainability agenda. With the EPDs Frauscher provides key environmental data to its B2B customers and other relevant stakeholders. This is as well a commitment for transparency in the sector of sensors and electronics.
