4th General Assembly of the SUSTAINEXT Project in Badajoz: Focus on Sustainability and New Crop Development
The 4th General Assembly meeting of the SUSTAINEXT project was held from 3-5 June 2025 at the headquarters of partner CTAEX Technological Centre, in Badajoz (Spain). Dr. Adriana Díaz from ECODESIGN actively presented the progress of the work package “Towards zero environmental impact and regulatory compliance”. Her presentation addressed the progress made in the last six months regarding the assessment based on life cycle thinking, and the activities planned for the next semester. Dr. Díaz also conducted a third workshop with the project partners, focusing on the Social Life Cycle Assessment, in particular looking at the current development of the new crops of medicinal and aromatic plants in Extremadura (Spain), and the possible strategies to scale-up these crops. Partners discussed how to engage more regional farmers and stakeholders, in a way that they can profit from the transition to these new crops. This workshop served as preamble to the field visit to the thistle, chamomile, lemon verbena and rosemary plantations of the project. These crops are the key sourcing of high quality feedstocks, to feed the dynamic bio-refinery, which will to produce novel botanical extracts for a variety of end-use applications. ECODESIGN continues working closely with the SUSTAINEXT partners for carrying out the sustainability assessments of this unique flagship project.
