{"id":3388,"date":"2025-10-07T17:55:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T15:55:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ecodesign-company.com\/?p=3388"},"modified":"2025-10-07T17:55:36","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T15:55:36","slug":"new-ecodesign-publication-on-the-lca-of-the-eu-project-sustainext","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ecodesign-company.com\/en\/uncategorized\/new-ecodesign-publication-on-the-lca-of-the-eu-project-sustainext\/","title":{"rendered":"New ECODESIGN publication on the LCA of the EU project SUSTAINEXT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We are pleased to announce the publication of the paper <strong>\u201c<a href=\"SUSTAINEXT: Validating a Zero-Waste, Dynamic, Multivalorization Route Biorefinery for Plant Extracts.\u201d\">SUSTAINEXT: Validating a Zero-Waste, Dynamic, Multivalorization Route Biorefinery for Plant Extracts.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study presents the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of botanical extract production, from feedstock sourcing to the final polyphenol-rich extracts, within the framework of the EU project <a href=\"https:\/\/ecodesign-company.com\/en\/reference\/sustainext-a-zero-waste-dynamic-biorefinery-in-extremadura\/\">SUSTAINEXT<\/a>. The LCA results shows that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>concentration of a given extract<\/strong> (for which more or less processing is needed), and the <strong>Feedstock Suitability Index (FSI)<\/strong> influence the environmental impacts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This LCA considers a cradle-to-gate system, and three allocation approaches of environmental impacts to the main product and co-products were modelled for the <strong>multi-output extraction processes<\/strong>. The <strong>polyphenol content-based<\/strong> and the <strong>economic-based allocation<\/strong> are the most suitable approaches for the valorization route investigated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data for<strong> crops and feedstock sourcing and their pre-treatments <\/strong>(e.g., fertilizer use, water, pesticides, energy, transport, packaging, wastes, etc.) continues to be collected, as the crops continue to develop, and first-hand data becomes available from project partners.
