2024 e.nova Conference
Dr. Díaz of ECODESIGN presented the paper “Policy Measures for Energy Efficiency of Data Centres” at the 2024 e.nova conference “Intelligent Energy and Climate Strategies” in Pinkafeld, June 2024. This paper outlines the latest results from the EDNA Workstream on Data centres, offering policy-makers recommendations to enhance data centre´s energy efficiency. It covers three main areas: new metrics for assessing energy efficiency, current and planned global policy initiatives, and estimating sector trends through modelling of energy consumption. Key policy options include mandatory data centre registries, labeling, and information requirements for incentives and procurement. EDNA experts estimate potential energy savings from measures targeted to technical areas of Data centres, such as reducing power usage effectiveness (PUE), increasing server utilization, shifting to cloud computing, and switching off IT equipment at periods of low utilization. Such measures could reach energy savings of 15 TWh/year by 2030 in Europe. This paper highlights the importance of minimizing energy losses in Data centres and explores the viability and impact of single and combined measures on energy savings. The paper is featured in the e.nova 2024 proceedings, available here.
